In the Light of Summer: Wisdom From Mother Earth
Hi everyone!
Rosalyn here from Two Wolves Wellness and Awakening Airwaves’ Seek & Surrender. This post is the first of what I hope to be many in a series where I invite you to take in the seasons of nature as teachers and guides. To take in the beautiful examples Mother Earth lays out for us and turn them into practical wisdom for your everyday life.
As we approach the Summer Solstice I wanted to share ways Mother Earth and the elements speak to us during this time of year. We’ll explore how each element–Fire, Water, Air, and Earth–can guide and balance us during the Summer months. So let us begin!
Fire
For many of us in the Northern Hemisphere, and especially those of us in Southern states (Howdy from Texas!), the summer months begin to really heat up. This heat, as well as our longer days, remind us of how present the Fire element can be within nature.
I think many of us may get distracted and think of Fire solely as initiator energy - a flash of insight, the strike of a match, a brilliant new idea. But don't limit Fire that way! Fire is light, it is warmth, it is a way to transform and a way to sustain! Fire purifies and electrifies us. Think of the experience of being burned by a flame — a visceral reminder of how Fire jolts us awake, activating the body, the mind, and the spirit. It sends a message to our system as the nerve endings rush toward our spine and up to the brain saying, 'Move!'. And it isn't just the initiator of motion, it is the encouragement and force to continue.
So in this summer season I invite you to move, to breathe into Mother Earth's most fertile and active season with abandon and joy. To know that you are fully supported because all is in bloom and prospering. Let new ideas flow, let exciting inspiration take root, and let the energy continue to burn brightly. Let the Fire of the summer months inspire you to continue.
Fire also allows us to see clearly in its light. With the longer days of Summer the Sun reminds us of how powerful light and Fire can be. It illuminates what needs to be seen, both what is visible and what is hidden in shadow.
We often practice this with Full Moons but you can also practice this now, in the heart of the Summer season, and set your intention for the sun, for fire, to show you the way to what needs to be addressed. Do not fear the unbecoming of self or the path that leads to it. Trust that what is illuminated is being brought to your attention at the perfect time and because you are ready. And trust that by addressing it, all will be filled with light once it is cleared.
Heat and the Elements
Let us return to heat. The summer months are so full of it and often we can feel exhausted by it. But what does heat really show us - it shows us frequency moving in one of its most excited states. Molecules rushing around together, bouncing off one another as fast as possible. It can be exhilarating to be in that frequency but it can also be overwhelming.
Mother Earth is the home of all elements so we can't move through this heat only examining Fire. We must also look at our other elemental friends.
Water – so crucial in the summer months to keep plants thriving, to keep our bodies hydrated, and to allow us to feel sweet relief in the summer heat. Like the perfect dip in a lake to cool off on a hot day.
Air – how often we beg for a breeze to come our way to cool us or for gusts of wind to bring much needed Summer storms into view.
Earth – our beautiful home and shelter, showing us abundance. Offering shade beneath her trees and grounding us in our bodies, encouraging us to move, play, and expand.
Invitation to Practice
Earth in these summer months in the Northern Hemisphere gives us all those extra hours of daylight to play and explore. To get outside and witness the blooming, thriving world. So I encourage you: step outside this summer. Walk in nature. Let the elements speak to you. Let your five senses ground you. Let Mother Earth guide you toward balance, presence, and joy — in the way she does best. As you move through this season with Mother Earth as your guide, may you find renewal, balance, and a deeper connection to both the world around you and the wisdom within you.
